Asbestos Inspector Training

With the rapid development and advancement in construction technology, there are innumerable materials which are being used for construction of residential and commercial buildings. Not all materials used in construction are safe. There are certain materials which pose a serious health hazard. Asbestos is one such material which is a fibre occurring naturally. This fibre tends to get airborne causing serious lung diseases and even cancer.

Asbestos content is present in a lot of building materials. Anyone who has been working in the construction industry like the plumber, mason, electrician, etc will be able to identify which of the materials have asbestos in it. Normally asbestos is found in certain floorings, ceiling treatments and insulating systems.

In case of any doubt, it is advisable to call an asbestos inspector who is well trained in identifying asbestos content. They will test the material in a certified laboratory and suggest means of eradicating the material containing harmful levels of asbestos.

Eradicating asbestos content is normally done by wetting the material before disposal to avoid fibres getting into the atmosphere and causing health problems.

Asbestos inspectors are those who are trained to identify Asbestos Containing Building Materials ( ACBM ) in schools, colleges, public buildings, residential buildings, etc.

The duration of the course varies with different institutes and states but the course content and accredition remains the same throughout the country. All asbestos inspector training courses have to be complied with US.EPA regulations. These courses incorporate EPA model curriculum which include seminars, lectures, demonstrations and practical workshops. After completion of the course, students will have to pass an examination after which they will be provided with a certificate of training.

Course duration is anywhere between twenty four hours and three days. Institutes offer short term courses; long term courses and online courses and students can choose the course according to their convenience. Students must attend at least 95% of classes to be eligible for certification.

This course equips students with information of asbestos, health hazards it poses, planning before inspection, protection, identifying the level of asbestos content in the material, identifying friable and non friable materials containing asbestos, assessment of friable materials containing asbestos, sampling, maintaining records by writing reports, etc.

There are qualified asbestos inspectors in all the states of America and a number of recognized institutes conduct excellent training programs. Some of the well known institutes are -
