These inspectors undergo a training program to make them aware of areas to monitor and if found lacking in sanitation and cleanliness, check whether the government standards are met, suggest remedies and follow up on whether they are corrected.

Public health inspectors are also called environmental health offices and one of their responsibilities apart from safeguarding the public from food borne and water borne diseases is also to educate them on their responsibility to keep their surroundings clean.

Health inspectors are trained to analyse and check samples of water from public swimming pools, beaches, recreational parks, spas, etc. They also have to see if the septic treatments systems are in place and in accordance with government regulations. Health inspectors basically take care of public health and safeguard the community from health hazards.

Training programs also equip them to work in their offices, answering the public queries, preparing reports and analyzing surveys, etc. Inspection work is normally done by the inspector on his own and he has to travel to many places scheduled for him. In case of doubts or clarifications he can consult his superiors or other team members or even a health professional.
