Welding Inspector Training

The process of fusing two metals using extreme heat and pressure is called welding. Though there are over a hundred methods of welding, two are most popular. They are arc welding and gas welding.

Arc welding involves usage of conductive arc to produce heat for welding. This is most commonly used in industries.

Gas welding involves mixing a combustible with oxygen to create a flame which is used to weld. Industries which use welding the most are the construction industries, oil industries, ship building industries, automobile industry, etc.

Welding technicians therefore are in high demand and welding engineering has become a big job prospect. With the increase in welding usage, demand for welding inspectors has been on the rise. A qualified welding inspector is on demand in all major industries.

There are a number of institutes which conduct the welding inspector's course. Some institutes offer a five day course which equips the students with knowledge on non destructive methods of testing and all other requirements to obtain a certificate to become field personnel.

Students are also coached on testing methods and radiographic interpretations. They are taken to a welding shop to learn about various procedures and principles of welding which will be helpful for the student after successful completion of the course to inspect welding equipments.

There are courses designed for people already experienced in welding inspection, supervision or training. These people normally attend these courses to obtain a formal certification.

Courses equip the students also with responsibilities of a person who inspects welding procedures for approval, weld designs and safety aspects or various industries like Oil and Gas, Power, Ship Building, etc. Inspectors also need to know how to test welds mechanically, specifications of steel, imperfections found in welds, procedure approval, repairs, codes and standards, etc.

Welding inspector courses are upgraded on a regular basis with new procedures and advancements. Any person aspiring to be a welding inspector should be a diploma holder in engineering or should have a science degree with at least six months of experience. If they are not a degree or diploma holder, they are required to have more number of years of experience.

It is very important for any manufacturing unit or shop to determine what process they have to use for welding depending on their needs. The welding inspector helps them with this too based on various factors like the material types that have to be joined, skill of the workers involved, products which are being made, etc.

Skilled, trained welders are in huge demand today. There are a lot of certification and vocational university level courses on welding available. Welding inspectors are also being produced in big numbers due to this demand in welding applications.

Some of the universities and institutes offering courses for welding inspector training are -

1. American Home Inspectors Training Institute 2. NDT.org for inspection and non destructive testing 3. The Philippines Welding society 4. Technological University of Philippines 5. St.Micheal's Institute

All above institutes can be contacted by mail or on the telephone. Contact details and information regarding courses are available on the institute's and University's websites.
